High Blood Pressure

Treating High Blood Pressure from the Inside Out

High blood pressure doesn’t have to mean lifelong medication. At my clinic, we take a functional medicine approach—uncovering root causes like toxins, food sensitivities, and hormonal imbalances to create a targeted, sustainable plan for naturally managing your blood pressure.

Understanding Hypertension & Its Root Causes

Hypertension is defined as systolic BP over 140 mm Hg and/or diastolic BP over 90 mm Hg. While most cases are labeled “essential” (with no known cause), functional medicine explores deeper. Conditions like chronic kidney disease, thyroid imbalances, and environmental toxicity often play a hidden role. Conventional medications—beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics—manage symptoms but don’t treat the root cause.

At my clinic, I evaluate potential contributors including diet, lifestyle, inflammation, toxin exposure, and thyroid dysfunction.

Environmental Toxins & Heavy Metals

Toxic exposures—especially to lead and cadmium—are overlooked drivers of high blood pressure. Lead is still found in older homes, canned foods, and certain industries. Cadmium, found in cigarette smoke and fertilizers, is another hidden culprit. We conduct advanced testing for heavy metals, and when toxicity is confirmed, I offer medical detox protocols tailored to your needs. Many patients experience blood pressure improvement through these detox pathways alone.

Hormonal and Thyroid Imbalances

Undiagnosed or undertreated thyroid conditions can contribute to hypertension. Even with “normal” lab values, clinical symptoms of low thyroid may point to the need for support. When appropriate, I prescribe bio-identical thyroid hormone or evaluate additional hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. Balancing hormones—especially in postmenopausal women—can dramatically lower blood pressure in select patients.

Food, Diet, and Elimination Protocols

Weight gain, high sodium, and poor-quality processed foods all contribute to hypertension. My first-line treatment includes a customized Mediterranean-style diet, matched to your caloric needs (measured in-office), and designed to reduce blood pressure and systemic inflammation.

We also use:

  • Elimination Diets to assess individual sensitivity to caffeine, alcohol, and high-sodium or allergenic foods

  • Salt Management for salt-sensitive individuals

  • Low-Glycemic Load Diets to minimize sugar-induced blood pressure spikes

  • DASH diet or vegetarian-style plans when appropriate

Patients often discover their blood pressure improves with simple but consistent dietary changes.

Let’s get to the root of your hypertension and build a plan that works for your unique body. Schedule a consultation today and take control of your heart health.

Functional Testing & Targeted Nutritional Support

I rely on advanced testing to assess inflammation, thyroid function, metabolic health, and food sensitivities. Based on these results, I create a tailored supplement plan, which may include:

  • Magnesium – for vascular relaxation

  • Potassium – supports healthy BP regulation

  • CoQ10 – supports cardiovascular health

  • Detox support nutrients if metals are present

  • Functional foods and herbs that naturally reduce blood pressure

Patients leave the clinic with a clear action plan: a detailed diet, customized supplements, and step-by-step strategies to reduce or even eliminate the need for medications.
